Last week, I learned something valuable about paint.
First, some history of the paint in our bathroom.
I had a housewarming party in September of 2010 shortly after I’d unpacked all my boxes and officially moved in to this condo.
My mother was coming over the following weekend to help me paint. I knew I wanted a light grey in the bedroom and some green shade in the bathroom.
In a fit of whimsy, I decided to make the color decision into a party game. I hung paint chips on the bathroom wall and people were allowed to vote for their favorite green hue each time they used the loo. I would paint the bathroom the winning color.
True to my word, the bathroom is sea glass.
It’s a lovely color, really, but after a year and a half, I was starting to hate it.
Was it a little stupid to let other people pick the color? Possibly. But it was fun.
Fast forward to last week… Will and I had ordered new bathroom hardware online and I spent some time swapping out towel bars and hooks. Part of this process naturally involved patching old, obsolete holes in the wall and touching them up with the cursed sea glass.
Once I had the paint out (we keep it in our storage unit downstairs which honestly isn’t far away but somehow feels like a schlep), I decided I may as well add a second coat of paint to the walls.
So yes, Mom and I had only done one coat that fated September day. The bathroom was the last thing we painted and we were tired. Or, I was. My mom is indestructible and probably left my place to go to the gym or something but I didn’t want to paint anymore so one coat was it.
Lesson Learned: Always paint a second coat.
First, the second coat did wonders for covering up any previously splotchy paint jobs. Second, the color is so much richer now. I seriously go into the bathroom and just stand there staring at the walls. So pretty.
I now have plans to touch up paint throughout the condo. Slowly.
