I started telling stories about some of my favorite objects a while back, but only got through two before it kind of fizzled. Recently, Emma of Marion House Book – the inspiration for the series – completed her set of fifty-two items. In the intro to Object 51, there was a shout-out to yours truly. First of all, holy moly! A mention on Marion House Book! Secondly, it re-invigorated me to take a look at my possessions. Once I did, I realized there were many more stories to be told.
The Object: Wooden Turtle
The Origin: A craft tent at Buffalo Grove Days / Labor Day Weekend 1997
The Backstory: Buffalo Grove Days is the official festival of my hometown. Summer after Freshman year of high school, I walked down to the fair with my then-boyfriend. He was my first love, and the Summer was full twitterpation and the first feelings of adulthood.
Then-Boyfriend and I walked down to the festival and wandered through the booths in the crafts section. I spotted the turtle at a booth selling all manner of wooden animals. I’m not sure why the turtle specifically spoke to me, but I was determined to make him mine. Then-Boyfriend insisted that the vendors at these booths were open to a certain level of negotiation concerning prices. I wasn’t so sure. I don’t remember exactly how much the turtle cost, but Then-Boyfriend got the price reduced by $2.
As I carried my new turtle through the rest of the festival, I didn’t feel right about our discount. Can you really haggle at a craft fair? Later, when Then-Boyfriend was in line for the porta-potties, I ran back to the wooden animal booth and shoved $2 in a very confused vendor’s hand.
The turtle has spent time on the windowsills of many apartments since I moved to Chicago, so he’s a little faded and in need of some TLC. That, or I need to embrace his new patina.

Go for it! It wasn’t my idea originally (I credit Emma of Marion House). It’s fun to look at your stuff with the thought of the story behind them.
