Our condo – in a converted factory – has three floor-to-ceiling cement columns. The layout is such that they are tucked along the wall lines and out of the way.
I’ve let my green, leafy vine grow around the column in the kitchen. Recently, my mother’s cousin was in town, and she suggested hanging small ornaments from the vine for Christmas. I took her up on this idea.
After some brief trial and error, it became clear that the ornaments strung from the vine would have to be lightweight and unbreakable. These Swedish straw ornaments I already had were perfect. Plus, while I feel like these ornaments crowded the Christmas tree in prior years (my tree is a mishmash of merry memories and having too many “same-y” ornaments looked like a theme I’d abandoned), I think their same-ness is perfect here.
I love the idea of Christmas decorations in unexpected places. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good Christmas tree. I’d also be decorating the heck out of a mantle if we had one. However, this year, I’ve been inspired (in part by the West Elm catalog, actually) to decorate in new places – stay tuned.
