As it’s still January, resolutions and reflections are still fair game. This year, I have a phrase on which I’d like to focus.
I’m the kind of person who can get completely caught up in the details. I’m fairly organized and can get lost trying to impose order on everything around me. I want everything to be flawless. I sweat the small stuff. All of the small stuff. Small stuff over which I have no business sweating.
I’m sure this next revelation won’t blow any minds, but here it is: being overly detail-oriented can cause you to miss the big picture.
There’s a lot going on this year. I don’t want to miss any of it by being physically one place and mentally another.
This can be a challenge, but practice is the only path to improvement, yes? I fared well recently when I put a stressful situation out of my mind while attending a family event. Nothing I could do at that moment would improve the stressful situation, so the best thing for me was to enjoy the heck out of the family event and return to other thoughts later.
Not allowing myself to constantly focus on what needs “fixing” can also help keep things in perspective. Sometimes the small stuff really is just that – small stuff that no one should really sweat over.

I am so with you… just wrote last night about how my to-do lists are consuming my life. I am looking for a way to step away from the details and just be. Here’s to both of us learning to be OK with less structure!

Oh boy, this is totally me.
I love to handle details, get in between to try and solve problems for people i love…. Sometimes multi-tasking is a terrible gift.
So often my mind is onto whats next, while my body is still lagging behind. Never being able to keep up is such a rough feeling.
Great goal, one i hope I can achieve too!
