In the quest for healthier kids, the other half of the school lunch debate is whether or not kids have access to physical education in school. Gym, like Art and Music, gets cut when budgets are short or scores on standardized testing drop.
I started to think about my own experiences with gym class. With eight schools in four states, I like to think I have a decent sample.
Grade School
Fifth grade was the best year. My gym coaches, Coach Raughton and Couch Pitts (this teaming is even better when you learn that “Raughton” is pronounced “Rotten”), were encouraging and inclusive. Beyond standard games, we learned to walk on stilts and juggle. We played epic games of Capture the Flag and Crab Soccer. Coach Pitts even got a huge tire we could crawl inside and he’d roll us around the yard (Until a certain girl fell out and got a concussion. Not me, I swear).
Junior High
My Junior High gym coach was just as encouraging as Coach Pitts and Coach Raughton, but I’d changed. We’d recently moved to the area and the sheer awkwardness of being the new girl, being thirteen, and being unsure of my own athleticism combined to make me less excited about the sports we were learning.
I have absolutely no memories of being teased for being gangly and uncoordinated. On the contrary, my memories of Junior High Gym are a rosy blur of us all cheering for one another and being supportive of the slowest and least-athletic among us. Is this what actually happened? I have no idea. That age is known for its navel-gazing and I only really remember how I was treated.
High School
Technically, high school students in Illinois are required to take gym class. Practically, this requirement is easily avoided (or, at least, it was in my school).
Marching band? Counts as a sport and gets you out of gym for the Fall semester. Participation in Varsity sports would excuse you for the semester in which the sport was played.
Health class? Buys you a pass out of gym.
Seniors planning to swap the gym period with an academic class were also allowed to forego gym.
As a result, I took gym only once in high school – second semester of freshman year. I got to spend a semester swimming. As I’d been a competitive swimmer for years, my role was to help the instructor teach my peers to dive. I was far too shy and self-conscious to actually correct anyone, so everyone left the class feeling like mini-Louganises.
Gym was easy to scam. If you actually had to take it, you could still avoid serious activity fairly easily. Tuesday and Thursday were devoted to Cardio activities. The most-popular for my friends and I was walking around the track in a group, gossiping about those who weren’t present. We had gym 1st period, so there was no incentive to get all yucky for the sake of participation.
What were your experiences in gym class? Did you love it? Dread it? Easily avoid it?

HATED most of gym class through middle and HS. It was primarily team sports and I am lousy at most of them which also drew the ire of my classmates.
we did square dancing in middle school … nothing like making 12 year olds square dance with each other. the only cool days were when they rented skates from the Roller Dome and we rollerskated around the gym to popular music. (I still think of Wreckx-n-Effect…)
In high school, sophomore year was better than freshman (two years were required in Indiana, and neither band nor health got you out of it). Sophomore year we did a swimming unit, golf, ping pong, archery … that stuff I kinda liked.
But it was still a largely awkward time for me. Bleh.

HA! I never had a gym class until I went to public High School. (I went to Catholic school until then– BUT I have great handwriting..teehee) I enjoyed my gym class, I think, because I had never had it before–and the idea of DOING something other than sitting at a desk all day was fun. I did not however like the UGLY-old fashioned gym suits we had to wear – My mother embroidered my name across the back AND across the front pocket…( like someone was going to steal this lovely uniform). I remember playing softball and field hockey..I remember being terrible at basketball and at gymnastics- archery AND especially golf! (“REPLACE THOSE DIVOTS, GIRLS!” I can still hear Ms. Rose’s voice) I was ever so grateful when we could choose “our own” gym class- from Sophmore year and up. I took dance and loved every minute of it. Ahhhhh what a relief. WE still had to play softball and we still had Volleyball….but only for a short period of time–

I loved gym class in Grade School.
Hated it in the seventh grade, though! After each gym class we had to strip completely naked, (Towels weren’t handed out to us until after we finished showering) walk through the locker room butt-bare-to-the-world, and shower in open showers with 29 other girls, all while the girls gym teacher watched us as we showed.
We had the exact same routine grades 8 through 12, but thankfully I was so used to it by the end of the seventh grade that it was no longer embarrassing, it just became a fact-of-life by that point.
I had always assumed that all schools had the same mandatory shower rule as my school, but I have since found out that a lot of schools had already done away with that rule by that point.

We had showers in the gym in Junior High (like, they were there but we NEVER used them). You always see shower scenes in movies of high school and you know something terrible is about to happen (like in Carrie!).

Heya just wanted to give you a brief heads up and let you know a few of the images
aren’t loading correctly. I’m not sure why but I think
its a linking issue. I’ve tried it in two different web browsers and
both show the same outcome.
