My trips to South Carolina have all been in a car whilst passing through – notably the summer we drove from Texas to visit our grandparents in North Carolina.
50 Memories: Rhode Island
50 Memories: New Mexico
My first time in New Mexico was to go camping with my best friend from 4th grade. We later got in a huge fight and never spoke again. But in 4th grade, we were tight. Her family went to Cloudcroft, New Mexico each summer for a family reunion. As my friend was one of the only female cousins, she was allowed to bring a friend to keep her company. She chose me, and we quickly got to planning.
First, the trip there: we already called the two mid-row captains chairs in her family’s van (her little brother would have to make do with the bench in the back). We requested snack coolers be placed right in front of us so we could lean the chairs back, put our legs up on the coolers, and lie completely flat. We were geniuses.
Second, we wanted to sleep in her Grandmother’s RV rather than in a tent. Tents were cool and all, but been there, done that. I’d never slept in an RV.
My next trip to New Mexico was for a swim meet. My cousin came out from Virginia to visit and rode with us to the competition. I can’t even imagine how dull a swim meet would be to those not swimming (Thanks, Mom & Dad! / Sorry, Mom & Dad!) but we did get to go see Carlsbad Caverns (with my 5th-grade-best-friend in tow. But she and I were in a fight at the time. I was a feisty child).
50 Memories: Nevada
My old job sent me to Nevada and I was pumped to check off another state (despite being less-than-pumped about why I got to do so). We were to be in Vegas for a week.
The first part of the week was finishing up a big project. The second part was celebrating being done with said project. Oh, the stories from the night we finished up…
After work was done, I flew Will out to join me in Vegas. Due to all my flights and hotel-stays for work, his flight and our stay at the Cosmopolitan were free (perk!).
Will and I aren’t big gamblers (or small gamblers, or gamblers at all, really) but we made our way through the casinos playing the cheapie games. We slowly learned that you should never buy your own drinks in Vegas. If you are playing a game, someone will bring you a beer. I won about $30 on a game called Unicorn Magic and felt pretty special.
Our hotel had a very swanky casino, but some of the other casinos along the strip were very depressing – full of stale smoke and sadness.
We had a fancy dinner at the Mandarin Oriental one night and spent part of another day in Banana Republic (sales tax in Illinois are brutal, so we take opportunities to shop elsewhere… though, really, as an accountant, I always pay the state back at the end of the year for the difference in sales tax because I’m super fun like that).
