A certain card has been hanging on our refrigerator since late August. Shortly after our engagement, my cousins sent Will and I celebratory cupcakes from Molly’s Cupcakes. The treats came with a brightly-colored, fun notecard that I haven’t been able to discard.
In part, the card is a tangible memory of the bliss of being newly-engaged. Perhaps I’ve become more sentimental about certain things. Either way, I’m not a scrapbooker nor a fan of clutter, so I wanted to find a way to “keep” it but liberate it from the front of the fridge.
The Project:
Inspired both by this post.
I decided to get crafting. I had a set of empty glass ornaments (from Target) and tested to make sure the top was easily removable. It was. Proceed.
Step 1: Cutting the card into small(ish) strips.
As you can see, this was completely free-form. I initially intended to measure and draw faint, straight lines and cut very slowly… but let’s be serious, that’s not me.
Step 2: Rolling!
I used the body of an old pen to help get the rolling going smoothly. I found that, with cardstock, the paper tends to bend and fold if you don’t have something round to use as a “guide” – at least while you are getting the “roll” started.
The card I was working with was orange on one side, white on the other. I chose to roll half of my strips one way and half the other to make my finished product a little more colorful.
Step 3: Feeding the “rolls” into the ornament.
Once all the strips were safely inside, I replaced the top of the ornament.
And, voila! Here it is nestled in our tree:
As there is still room in the ornament itself, I may add another shredded card from these cousins in the future.
Not keen on keeping cupcake-related correspondence? I filled another ornament with my friend’s wedding invitation for a slightly-more-meaningful tree decoration. (And yes, I’ve already given said ornament to said about-to-be married couple, so no, I didn’t ruin Christmas).
