Cinderella Ate My Daughter: Dispatches from the Frontlines of the New Girl-Girl Culture by Peggy Orenstein
I’ve been meaning to read this book for awhile and now that I’m expecting a girl, it seemed even more relevant. Orenstein discussed Disney Princesses and the overwhelming power of Pink in the world of young girls. How much is the child’s honest preference and how much is marketing and socialization?
This book is so thorough and well-researched… but then just ends. I was left wishing for instructions as to what to do to combat the pink (besides just “avoid” which seems fruitless).
Double Cross: The True Story of the D-Day Spies by Ben Macintyre
Reading about WWII (like most history, I imagine) is interesting because you know how things are going to pan out. I like learning about how close humanity came to another outcome. In this book, we met a group of spies working as double agents for the British feeding false knowledge to the Germans about where the impending invasion of mainland Europe would take place. To divert attention from the beaches of Normandy, the Allies made a show of possibly attempting to invade at the Pas de Calais (which I knew) and Norway (which I did not!). Despite knowing the outcome, the details had me quickly turning pages to see how individual stories would play out.
So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed by Jon Ronson
I think we all heard about this book when it came out. That or Jon Ronson’s press tours happened to coincide to an incredible degree with my media consumption habits. Either way, I knew I needed to add it to my wait list at the library. I was a little nervous that I would have already heard all the stories it contained (just about every interview with Ronson covered two women who are case studies of a sort in the book) but there was far more within.
I wasn’t aware of any of the shamings mentioned in the book in the moment they happened (I’m on Twitter but I’m markedly not that plugged in) so I can’t say precisely how I would have acted given the option. I’m a bit more aware of my love of schadenfreude now, though, and will think more before engaging in any pile-ons in the future.
In the Woods by Tana French
This book came so highly recommended (and the wait list at the library reflected that in its length). The story begins in 1984 when two young children disappear from the woods in suburban Dublin. Their friend, the sole survivor, goes on to join the Murder Squad and solve crimes in the city. In current day, he’s drawn into a murder back in his hometown which he hopes to unravel without anyone learning who exactly he is. The book is the first in a series, so while we solve the current mystery, the 30 year-old one is left unresolved.
The Psychopath Test: A Journey Through the Madness Industry by Jon Ronson
I’m now working my way through the Ronson oeuvre. In this one, Ronson explores what it is, precisely, that makes one a psychopath. I think the word gets thrown around so casually – I, myself, have called my cat a sociopath – that it loses some of its true meaning. It’s chilling (and heartbreaking, truly) to think that there is a mental condition that current science deems incurable. A world without the possibility of rehabilitation seems a curse.
It was also interesting to read this book right after In the Woods, which is probably a spoiler (sorry).
The Einstein Prophecy by Robert Masello
It’s interesting for me to think about how actual historical figures – Einstein in this case – would feel about their inclusion on our fictional accounts of events around his lifetime. This book takes place in Princeton where an ancient Egyptian sarcophagus taken from the Nazi art looters is brought to America for study. Einstein, having fled the Nazis himself, is also currently at that University doing research for the Manhattan project. The book is a kind of thriller/fantasy as the opening of the sarcophagus releases an ancient evil into the modern world.
