Every Man Dies Alone by Hans Fallada
I remarked as I started this book that it has one of the highest ratings of any book I’d seen on GoodReads. Yes, rating sites tend to skew high, but still! Impressive! This of course makes me feel like perhaps I’m missing something when my own personal thoughts about the book were less emphatic. This book deals with resistance among Germans in Berlin – something I have not read much about despite my love of WWII books and the many accounts I’ve read of resistance efforts in France and Belgium.
Happier at Home by Gretchen Rubin
I enjoyed The Happiness Project and loved hearing Rubin speak at Alt Summit 2012 (the conference at which I decided to leave my corporate job and start my own company, so, clearly, a very special place in my heart), so I new I wouldn’t be disappointed when I saw this book at the library. I wasn’t. If you like Rubin’s straightforward style and analysis, you won’t be either. Per her instruction, I’ve started wearing perfume on a more-regular basis and am trying to create small shrines to happiness throughout my home.
The Weed that Strings the Hangman’s Bag by Alan Bradley
This is the second in Bradley’s series of mysteries told through the eyes of 11 year-old Flavia de Luce. The books are set in 1950s rural England and the protagonist endears herself to me with her love of chemistry and her dry wit. I have all of the Flavia books on my wishlist at the library so I can read them as they come available (they are quite popular!), so expect to see the rest of the series here in 2015. In this particular story, Flavia solves a mystery involving the death of a traveling puppeteer.
Callander Square by Anne Perry
This book is also the second in a series (though I believe I read the first one – The Cater Street Hangman – back in 2008 when it came out. I clearly like a good series, and this one is extra special because my mother also reads it. A husband and wife team solving mysteries in Victorian London makes for quick and easy reading.
