Oh, Texas. I only spent three years of my youth as a Texan, but this state features prominently in most of my childhood stories.
As competitive swimmers, my sister and I had swim meets all over the western part of the state (and even in New Mexico!).
- We loved meets in Lubbock because the pool at Texas Tech had a huge warm-up area and carpet-covered risers for us to climb on and play “light as a feather, stiff as a board” with our teammates.
- I personally hated Amarillo because the pool water there was dark as the sea and I had a deep fear of shark attacks.
- One time, however, on the way to Amarillo, Kerry got sick in the back of the car and we pulled over to the side of the road to adjust. My mother ended up sitting in the back with Kerry and I got to sit in the front! I remember this being very cool.
- After a meet in Abilene, my dad and I went to the zoo and I got to feed a giraffe. At the gift shop, I got Kerry a stuffed giraffe. He had a wire in his neck to keep it upright. We quickly broke that wire and, as a result, his head usually hung at a disturbing angle.
